Cash Out Betting: How It Works and the Best Cash Out Bookies

Cash out button on a horse racing betting app

Cash out lets you settle a bet before the event has finished. You take a guaranteed amount now instead of waiting for the result, which means you can lock in some profit on a bet that’s going well or get part of your stake back on one that isn’t.

This guide covers how cash out works, the difference between full, partial and auto cash out, how the offer is worked out, why it sometimes disappears, and which UK bookmaker apps offer it.

Quick answer: Cash out lets you settle a bet early for a guaranteed amount before the event finishes. Most UK bookmakers offer full cash out, and some, including bet365 and Betfair, also offer partial and auto cash out. There’s no fee, but the offer includes the bookmaker’s margin, so it’s usually a little below the bet’s true value.

What is cash out betting?

When you place a bet, the bookmaker keeps re-pricing it as the event unfolds. Cash out is that live price turned into a cash offer. If your selection’s chances have improved since you bet, the offer will usually be more than your stake. If they’ve got worse, it will be less.

Accept the offer and the bet is settled straight away, whatever happens next. The money goes into your account and the bet can’t be reopened.

Full, partial and auto cash out

Type What it does Best for
Full cash out Settles the whole bet at the current offer Taking a guaranteed return and walking away
Partial cash out Settles part of the bet and leaves the rest running Banking some profit while keeping an interest in the result
Auto cash out Settles automatically if the offer reaches a value you set Protecting a profit when you can’t watch live

Not every bookmaker offers all three, and none offers them on every market.

A cash out example

You back a horse with £10 at 8/1. If it wins, you get £90 back (£80 profit plus your £10 stake).

The horse is leading turning for home and its in-running price has shortened sharply, so the app offers you £55 to cash out.

  • Cash out in full: you get £55, a £45 profit, whether the horse wins or not.
  • Let it run: you get £90 if it wins and nothing if it’s caught.
  • Partial cash out of half: you take about £27.50 now and leave a £5 stake running, worth £45 more if the horse wins.

The cash out offer is always lower than the full return, because you’re swapping the chance of the bigger payout for certainty.

How is the cash out value worked out?

The offer is based on the current odds of your selection compared with the odds you took. If the price has shortened, your bet is worth more. If it has drifted, your bet is worth less.

Bookmakers build a margin into the offer, so cashing out usually returns a little less than the bet’s “fair” value. That’s why cashing out over and over tends to cost you money over time. There’s no separate fee, but the margin is the price of the feature.

How to cash out on a betting app

  1. Open the app and go to My Bets (sometimes called Open Bets or Bet History).
  2. Find the bet. If cash out is available you’ll see a Cash Out button showing the current offer.
  3. For a partial cash out, use the slider or amount box to choose how much to settle.
  4. Tap to confirm. Offers change quickly, so the app may ask you to accept an updated amount.
  5. The money appears in your balance, usually immediately.

Which bookies offer cash out?

Most major UK bookmaker apps offer cash out on popular sports. Partial and auto cash out are less common.

Bookmaker Full Partial Auto
bet365 Yes Yes Yes (selected markets)
Betfair Yes Yes Yes (Exchange)
Sky Bet Yes Yes No
Paddy Power Yes Yes No
Ladbrokes Yes Yes No
BetVictor Yes Yes No
10bet Yes Yes No

Features change, so check in the app before you bet. Last checked: October 2026. William Hill and Betfred also offer cash out; see our guides above. Compare all the apps in our bookmaker app reviews.

Cash out on the Betfred and William Hill apps

Both Betfred and William Hill offer cash out in their apps, on racing and on most other sports. It works the same way in each:

  1. Place your bet as normal. Singles, each-way bets and accumulators can all be eligible.
  2. Open My Bets (or Open Bets). Any bet that can be cashed out shows a Cash Out button with the current value.
  3. Tap the button and confirm. The amount is added to your balance straight away.

William Hill also offers partial cash out on many bets, so you can take some of the stake back and leave the rest running. Cash out is not available on every market, and it can be suspended during a race or when the market is moving fast. The offer is always at the bookmaker’s price, so you usually get back less than the bet would be worth on its true chances. Read each app’s terms for the latest rules, and see our Betfred app and William Hill app reviews for their real ratings.

Cash out on horse racing

Cash out on racing is more limited than on football, because a race lasts only a few minutes and prices move very fast. Things to know:

  • Many bookmakers offer cash out on win and each-way singles and on accumulators, both before the off and in-running.
  • During the race the offer can be suspended for seconds at a time while prices are updated.
  • Ante-post bets and long-term outright markets are often not eligible.
  • Pool bets such as the Placepot, Jackpot and Scoop6 usually can’t be cashed out.

Why is cash out unavailable or suspended?

If the Cash Out button is missing or greyed out, it’s usually one of these:

  • The market doesn’t offer it. Not every bet type or event is eligible, so check before you place the bet.
  • The market is suspended. After a big moment, such as a goal, a wicket or a faller, bookmakers pull cash out for a few seconds while they re-price. It normally comes back.
  • You used a free bet or bonus funds. Many bookmakers exclude free bets, or take the free bet’s value out of the offer so it shows £0.00 until your returns pass it.
  • The bet is settled or nearly settled. Once a race has finished or a result is in, cash out closes.
  • A technical or data delay. A slow live feed can briefly stop cash out.

If it stays unavailable, wait a minute and refresh. If it still doesn’t come back, contact the bookmaker’s support.

Can you cash out on a betting exchange?

Yes. On an exchange such as Betfair Exchange you’re betting against other people, not a bookmaker. Cashing out means placing an opposite bet: you lay what you backed (or back what you laid) to lock in a result. This is often called “greening up”, and Betfair Exchange has a button that does it for you.

Because exchange margins are usually lower, cashing out there can return more than at a bookmaker. Commission is charged on net winnings. See our guide to betting exchanges.

Which sports can you cash out on?

Cash out is most widely offered on football, horse racing, tennis, cricket, golf and darts. You’ll also find it on rugby, basketball, snooker, Formula 1, boxing and MMA at many bookmakers. It’s usually offered on major events first.

Should you cash out?

Cash out is a tool, not a free win. A few rules of thumb:

  • Decide your plan before the event. Know what you’d accept to cash out, and use auto cash out if your bookmaker offers it.
  • Don’t cash out every time you get nervous. Because of the margin, frequent cashing out costs money over time.
  • Use partial cash out to bank some profit while keeping some interest in the result.
  • Cutting losses works best with a clear reason, such as a horse clearly beaten or a key player injured, not as a reaction to every price move.

Set deposit limits in your app and take a break if betting stops being fun. You can also block betting apps on your phone.

Cash out FAQs

What does cash out mean in betting?

Cash out means settling your bet early for an amount the bookmaker offers before the event finishes. You get a guaranteed return straight away, which can be more or less than your stake depending on how the bet is going.

Is there a fee to cash out a bet?

No UK bookmaker charges a separate fee to cash out, but the offer has the bookmaker’s margin built in. The amount you’re offered is usually a little below what the bet is really worth, so cashing out often tends to cost money over time.

Can you cash out a free bet?

Sometimes. Many UK bookmakers either don’t let you cash out free bets, or take the free bet stake out of the offer, so it can show £0.00 until your potential returns are higher than the free bet. Check your bookmaker’s free bet terms.

Can you cash out an accumulator?

Yes. Most UK bookmakers let you cash out an accumulator before the first leg starts and while the remaining legs are still running. Cashing out an acca usually cancels any acca insurance or boost attached to it.

Can you cash out a Lucky 15 or Yankee?

Some bookmakers offer cash out on multiple bets such as a Lucky 15, Yankee or Trixie, but many don’t. If no Cash Out button shows next to the bet in My Bets, that bet type isn’t eligible at that bookmaker.

Why is cash out not available on my bet?

Cash out is usually unavailable because the market doesn’t offer it, the market is briefly suspended after a big moment such as a goal or a faller, you placed the bet with a free bet, or the event has finished. Short suspensions normally clear within a minute.

Can you cash out on horse racing?

Yes. Most major UK bookmakers offer cash out on horse racing singles and accumulators, before the off and often in-running. Ante-post bets and pool bets such as the Tote Placepot usually can’t be cashed out.

Can you reverse a cash out?

No. Once you confirm a cash out, the bet is settled for good and can’t be reopened, even if your selection goes on to win.

What happens if an event is abandoned after you cash out?

Your cash out still stands. You keep the amount you accepted, because the bet was settled at the moment you cashed out, not when the event ended.

Can you cash out a bet placed in a betting shop?

Some UK bookmakers let you cash out shop bets, either at the counter or by scanning your betting slip in their app. Ask in the shop or check the bookmaker’s app to see if your slip is eligible.

How quickly do you get your money after cashing out?

Cashed-out money usually goes into your account balance immediately. You can then withdraw it like any other winnings, which can take from a few minutes to a few working days depending on your payment method.

Is it worth cashing out?

It depends on the situation. Cashing out makes sense when you have a clear reason, such as locking in profit on a big accumulator or cutting losses when your horse is clearly beaten. Cashing out on every bet out of nerves tends to cost money because of the bookmaker’s margin.
