How to Bet on Horse Racing on the William Hill App: Each-Way, Lucky 15 & Cash Out

william hill cash out

This guide shows you how to bet on horse racing in the William Hill app: a win bet, an each-way bet, a Lucky 15, how to cash out, and how to do a placepot. It also covers William Hill’s Best Odds Guaranteed and its Lucky 15 bonuses, using William Hill’s own published rules.

Quick answer: In the William Hill app, open horse racing, pick a race and tap a horse’s price to add it to your bet slip. Tick each way for an each-way bet, or add four horses from different races and choose Lucky 15. To cash out, open My Bets and tap Cash Out on the bet. Cash out works on win bets on UK and Irish racing, but not on each-way bets.

How to place a win bet on the William Hill app

  1. Log in to the William Hill app and check you have funds in your account.
  2. Open horse racing and pick the meeting, then the race.
  3. Tap the price next to the horse you want. It’s added to your bet slip.
  4. Open the bet slip, enter your stake and check the potential returns.
  5. Place the bet. It then shows in My Bets.

If you’ve opted in to William Hill’s Best Odds Guaranteed and take a price on race day after 8am, you’re paid at the starting price if it’s bigger. See how BOG works below.

How to place an each-way bet on the William Hill app

An each-way bet is two bets of the same stake: one for your horse to win and one for it to be placed. A £5 each-way bet costs £10. William Hill takes each-way bets on races with five or more runners.

  1. Add the horse to your bet slip by tapping its price.
  2. In the bet slip, tick the each way (E/W) box next to the selection.
  3. Enter your stake per part. The bet slip shows the total, which is double.
  4. Check the total stake and potential returns, then place the bet.

William Hill’s standard each-way terms are:

Race Each-way terms
2 to 4 runners Win only
5 to 7 runners 1/4 the odds, 2 places
8 or more runners (non-handicap) 1/5 the odds, 3 places
Handicaps, 8 to 11 runners 1/5 the odds, 3 places
Handicaps, 12 to 15 runners 1/4 the odds, 3 places
Handicaps, 16 or more runners 1/4 the odds, 4 places

If non-runners reduce the field, each-way bets are settled on the new place terms, whenever you placed the bet. For example, a 16-runner handicap that ends up with 15 runners pays three places, not four.

Example: £5 each-way on a horse at 8/1 in a 10-runner race (1/5 the odds, 3 places). If it wins, you get £45 from the win part and £13 from the place part, so £58 back from your £10. If it finishes second or third, you get £13 back. If it’s unplaced, you lose £10.

Each Way Extra

William Hill also runs Each Way Extra markets, where you choose your own place terms, such as paying more places at a smaller fraction of the odds. They open from 8am on UK racing and 10am on Irish racing, on races with four or more runners. It’s a separate market from the standard each-way bet, and Best Odds Guaranteed and cash out don’t apply to it.

How to place a Lucky 15 on the William Hill app

A Lucky 15 is 15 bets on four horses in different races: 4 singles, 6 doubles, 4 trebles and 1 four-fold accumulator. A £1 Lucky 15 costs £15, or £30 each-way.

  1. Add four horses from four different races to your bet slip by tapping their prices.
  2. Open the bet slip. With four selections, it lists the multiple bets you can place, including the Lucky 15.
  3. Enter your stake per bet on the Lucky 15 line. A £1 stake means £15 in total.
  4. Tick each way if you want it each-way, which makes it 30 bets.
  5. Check the total stake, then place the bet.

William Hill’s Lucky 15 bonuses:

Result What William Hill adds
Only one winner Double the odds on that winner
All four win 10% bonus added to your winnings

The bonuses use your winnings, not your stake, and the bet must have equal stakes on every line. On each-way Lucky 15s, the one-winner consolation only applies to the win part. Ante-post prices don’t qualify, and all four horses must run. Lucky 31s (five horses) and Lucky 63s (six horses) get the same double-odds consolation, with a 20% and 25% all-winners bonus.

Example: a £1 win Lucky 15 on horses at 2/1, 3/1, 4/1 and 5/1 costs £15. If only the 5/1 horse wins, the double-odds consolation pays it at 10/1, so you get £11 back instead of £6. If all four win, the bet returns £839 before the 10% bonus on your winnings.

How to cash out on the William Hill app

  1. Tap My Bets to see your open bets.
  2. Find the bet. If cash out is available, it shows a Cash Out value.
  3. Tap Cash Out, then Confirm. If the value changes before you confirm, the app tells you.

On horse racing, William Hill’s cash out has some important limits:

  • It only works on UK and Irish races, and only on win bets on named horses.
  • It isn’t available on each-way bets, ante-post bets, Price Boosts or Bet Builders.
  • You can cash out before a race and between races, but not while a race is running.
  • Bets with a racing selection can’t be cashed out between 10pm and 8am.
  • In an accumulator, if one selection can’t be cashed out, the whole bet can’t.
  • Partial cash out isn’t available in the current app.

Bets placed with a free bet can be cashed out, but the value of the free bet is taken off. Read our cash out guide for how cash out offers are worked out.

How to do a placepot with William Hill

William Hill acts as an agent for the Tote, so your placepot goes straight into the live Tote pool and pays the same dividend as the Tote. Open horse racing, pick the meeting, go to the Tote pool bets and choose Placepot. Then pick at least one horse in each of the first six races. William Hill also takes the Quadpot, Jackpot and Scoop6. Our placepot guide explains the rules, place terms and costs.

William Hill Best Odds Guaranteed

William Hill offers Best Odds Guaranteed (BOG) on UK and Irish horse racing. If you take a price and the starting price is bigger, you’re paid at the bigger price. The key terms are:

  • You need to opt in. Eligible customers see a “Best Odds Guaranteed – Opt In” option on the racecards, and the opt-in then stays on.
  • It applies to bets placed from 8am on race day until the off. Bets placed earlier are settled at the price you took.
  • It covers win and each-way singles and multiples, so a Lucky 15 placed after 8am qualifies.
  • It’s for online and app bets only, not bets in shops or by phone.
  • Ante-post, Tote bets, Each Way Extra, place-only markets and betting without markets are excluded.
  • Extra winnings from BOG are capped at £25,000 per customer per day.

Compare BOG across bookmakers in our Best Odds Guaranteed guide.

William Hill app FAQs

Can you cash out on the William Hill app?

Yes. Open My Bets and tap Cash Out on the bet. On horse racing it only works on win bets on UK and Irish races, and not while the race is running.

Why can’t I cash out my William Hill bet?

The most common reasons are that it’s an each-way bet, an ante-post bet, a Price Boost or a Bet Builder, that the race is under way, or that it’s between 10pm and 8am. In an accumulator, one selection without cash out blocks the whole bet.

Does William Hill do partial cash out?

Not at the moment. William Hill says partial cash out isn’t available in the current version of its app and that it’s working on it.

Does William Hill pay a bonus on a Lucky 15?

Yes. If only one horse wins, you get double the odds on it. If all four win, 10% is added to your winnings.

Does William Hill have Best Odds Guaranteed?

Yes, on UK and Irish racing, for bets placed online or in the app from 8am on race day. You need to opt in on the racecards first.

Can you do a placepot on William Hill?

Yes. William Hill takes placepots as an agent for the Tote, so your bet goes into the Tote pool.
